NAS 514 vs NAS 517

These screws on this web site meet the general requirements of the NAS 514 and NAS 517 specification with the only difference being the drive system is Torx®/Six Lobe instead of Cross Recess/Phillips. The NAS 514 is called a tension screw, is full thread and is heat treated to 125 - 145 KSI tensile strength in accordance with MIL-H-6875. The NAS 517 is called a shear screw, is partial thread and is heat treated to 160 - 180 KSI in accordance with AMS2759. The portion of the NAS 517 screw that is unthreaded is called the GRIP LENGTH and is measured from the top of the head to the start of threads. The Grip Body Diameter is critical on this screw and we have attached a table of this requirement (click here). We have also attached a table of GRIP LENGTHS for the NAS 517 screws. To access this table of grip lengths, please (click here).

Both screws are Cadmium Plated but because of the hardness after heat treating, the NAS 514 is Cadmium Plated to spec QQ-P-416 Type I (Silver Color), Class 2 which requires no special pre or post baking to prevent hydrogen embrittlement. But, the NAS 517 after heat treating is much harder and therefore requires special pre and post baking when Cadmium plated to prevent hydrogen embrittlement. The NAS 517 is Cadmium Plated per AMS QQ-P-416 Type II, (Yellow Color), Class 2.
